This is a fake passing play. Once the quarterback throws the ball, it is armed to explode on contact. The idea is to throw the ball into the midst of defenders and kill them in the explosion. Once the ball is thrown, the player assumes control of the receiver as usual, but he needs to run as far away from the target zone to avoid being caught in the explosion as well.
If the quarterback gets the pass off, the play ends as an incomplete pass so costs the offense a down. Consider the field situation before employing this play. If the quarterback attempts to scramble or is sacked, he and any nearby defenders will be blown up. If the Defense calls the Sticky Ball Dirty Trick at the same time, Bombs Away gets sabotaged, and the quarterback will blow up as soon as the ball comes back to him.
Penalties[]
If Bombs Away successfully kills opposition players, there is a risk of the referee calling a 15-yard penalty for Unncessary Manslaughter.
Bombs Away is technically considered throwing the ball away. If the defense calls a Dirty Trick of their own that targets the quarterback, this means the offense can get called a 15-yard penalty for Unnecessary Cowardice.
Trivia[]
"Bombs away!" is a common cry in military aviation whenever a bomber's payload is being released. From this, it has become common to call this out whenever throwing or dropping something, especially with the intent to hurt the receiver.
Boom Jet and Bomb-Shell from the Skylanders series share the catchphrase of the same name of this Dirty Trick.
